Adults Season 2 Ending Explained: Who Ends Up Together?
Spoiler warningThis story discusses major plot details and outcomes.

Adults Season 2 ends by finally doing what the show has spent two seasons threatening to do: it messes with the carefully balanced friendship group by turning two different friendships into something romantic. Paul Baker and Anton stop pretending there is nothing between them and kiss, while Billie and Samir pull off the finale’s sneakier reveal by secretly hooking up. Issa and Paul Baker are definitively over, and Samir’s relationship with Carly also ends before his night with Billie.

Somehow, all of this happens while Paul Baker is trying very hard to lose an election he originally wanted to win. The Season 2 finale, “Vote for Paul Baker,” turns a ridiculous homeowners association campaign into a surprisingly neat way of resolving the season’s bigger question: these five people are changing, but none of them is quite ready to leave the house or each other behind.

Why Does Paul Baker Have to Lose the HOA Election?

Paul Baker enters the finale running for president of the homeowners association against longtime president Sandy Adler. What begins as another Paul Baker project unexpectedly becomes serious when the friends realize he might actually win. Then Nina Adler gives Billie a much more urgent reason to sabotage the campaign.

Nina knows that five people are living in Samir’s family home even though the relevant housing rules allow only three. If Paul defeats her father, she threatens to expose the violation. That could cost the friends their home and potentially lead to the building being torn down. Winning suddenly becomes the worst possible outcome.

The group therefore performs a very Adults maneuver: after enthusiastically campaigning for Paul, they begin working just as hard to convince the neighborhood not to vote for him. Paul eventually understands what is at stake and is perfectly happy to sacrifice the presidency if losing protects the house.

The last obstacle is Mr. Lee. He plans to vote for Paul largely because he despises Adler, his former best friend, after Adler slept with his wife. And that is where Anton and Issa accidentally save everything.

Why Is Anton and Issa’s Conversation Broadcast to Everyone?

Anton and Issa are trying to deal with Paul Baker’s campaign when they have the conversation that Season 2 has been avoiding almost from the beginning. Anton finally acknowledges the obvious: his feelings for Paul Baker are real. Issa already knows.

She has been aware that something changed between Anton and Paul ever since the Season 1 wedding, when Anton legally married Paul to help him remain in the United States and their supposedly ceremonial kiss became considerably less ceremonial than anyone expected.

Issa could have treated Anton as the person who destroyed her relationship. Instead, she recognizes that the situation is more complicated. Her relationship with Paul Baker had already reached its natural endpoint, and Anton is also one of her closest friends. She doesn’t want him spending his life pretending otherwise simply to protect her.

Unfortunately for Anton, this deeply private discussion happens close enough to the neighborhood’s broadcast setup that their conversation ends up being transmitted publicly.

That embarrassment also produces the miracle the house needs. Hearing Anton and Issa talk about friendship, love and forgiveness makes Mr. Lee reconsider his own feud with Adler. He decides his old friendship matters more than the betrayal he has spent years resenting and gives Adler the decisive vote. Paul Baker loses. For once, losing really is winning.

Do Paul Baker and Anton Get Together?

Yes. Paul Baker and Anton finally act on their feelings at the end of Season 2.

Anton rushes back intending to tell Paul Baker how he feels, blissfully unaware that Paul has already heard the confession because the conversation was broadcast across the neighborhood.

That takes away the possibility of another misunderstanding. Paul knows Anton loves him, Anton realizes that Paul feels the same way, and the two kiss.

It is an important distinction that the season does not present Anton as simply “stealing” Paul from Issa. Paul and Issa have already broken up by this point. Anton has also spent much of the season holding himself back precisely because Issa is his best friend and he does not want pursuing Paul to become an act of betrayal.

That approach was baked into Season 2 from the beginning. The show’s creators described the situation before release as a genuine three-way emotional triangle because Anton and Issa’s friendship mattered just as much as either romantic pairing. The finale protects that friendship instead of sacrificing it for the romance. Paul and Anton’s legal marriage started as paperwork. By the Season 2 ending, there is finally something very real underneath it.

Why Do Samir and Carly Break Up?

Samir spends much of Season 2 seriously committed to Carly. When Carly gets an opportunity to attend college in Seattle, however, their relationship reaches the kind of problem that cannot be fixed by simply trying harder.

Samir decides he will move to Seattle with her. There is one rather enormous problem with his romantic gesture: he makes the decision without properly discussing it with Carly first.

Carly realizes what Samir is overlooking. His friends, his home and essentially his entire life are in New York. Moving across the country simply to prevent the relationship from becoming long distance would require him to sacrifice far more than either of them is ready for.

Rather than accepting the gesture because it sounds romantic, Carly pushes Samir to confront what he would actually be leaving behind. They ultimately break up.

It is painful, but Carly is not written as a villain who stands between Samir and Billie. Her breakup with Samir happens because their futures are moving in different directions. Only after that relationship ends does the finale turn toward Billie.

Do Billie and Samir Get Together?

Billie and Samir hook up in the final episode, and the last scene confirms it with a kiss. Billie’s emotional shift starts before she knows Samir and Carly have broken up. Samir’s announcement that he may move to Seattle hits her much harder than she expects.

That reaction matters. Billie and Samir have known each other since childhood, so Samir leaving would not simply mean losing another roommate. He is one of the fixed points of Billie’s life.

Season 2 spends plenty of time letting Billie date and letting Samir commit himself to Carly, which helps disguise where the finale is going. Only when Samir might disappear from Billie’s everyday life does she seem forced to consider whether her attachment to him is entirely platonic. The final gag deliberately misdirects us.

Issa hears what sounds like two people having sex in Samir and Paul Baker’s room. Given everything that has just happened, she assumes she is hearing Anton and Paul Baker consummating their newly acknowledged romance. She is wrong. Samir emerges from the room, and Billie is behind him. Once they realize they have avoided being caught, Billie and Samir kiss and disappear back inside. So yes, something finally happens between them.

Are Billie and Samir Officially a Couple?

That part is less certain. The finale confirms the hookup and mutual attraction, not necessarily a fully defined relationship. Billie and Samir have just crossed a line that has existed throughout one of the oldest friendships in the house. Their instinct is also to hide what happened. That suggests the difficult part comes next.

Anton and Paul Baker finish the season finally saying out loud what everyone else already suspected. Billie and Samir finish it doing almost the opposite: acting on their feelings and immediately keeping the result secret.

That is a very useful setup for another season. Billie and Samir now have to decide whether one night changes their friendship, reveals something that was always there, or becomes the spectacularly awkward mistake everyone living under one roof will eventually discover. And if Adults returns for Season 3, there is virtually no chance that this particular house can keep a secret for long.
