Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities gets a new television adaptation with Kit Harington at the center of a story about romance, sacrifice and revolution. The four-part MGM+ series begins in London in 1782, where Lucie Manette learns that the father she believed was dead may actually be alive in Paris. Her search brings two very different men, Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay, into her life and eventually takes all three toward a France on the verge of upheaval.
The A Tale of Two Cities cast is led by Kit Harington, Mirren Mack and Francois Civil, with Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Roxane Duran, Yannick Renier and several other British and French actors filling out the ensemble.

Kit Harington as Sydney Carton
Kit Harington plays Sydney Carton, a gifted English lawyer whose intelligence is matched by a much less orderly personal life. Carton becomes involved with Lucie after she asks him to help Charles Darnay, a French emigre who has been arrested and accused of treason.
The series presents Carton as brilliant but erratic, and his connection with Lucie quickly develops beyond a professional relationship. His feelings for her put him in direct competition with Darnay. The resemblance between the two men makes that rivalry even stranger, since they look remarkably alike while approaching life from completely different directions.

Carton is one of Dickens’ most memorable characters, and the role gives Harington a very different kind of troubled hero from Jon Snow. Harington is best known for playing Jon in Game of Thrones, while his more recent television work includes Industry. He also appeared as Dane Whitman in Marvel’s Eternals.
Harington has another important connection to the adaptation behind the camera. He serves as an executive producer through Thriker Films, the production company involved in developing the series with writer Daniel West.
Mirren Mack as Lucie Manette
Mirren Mack stars as Lucie Manette, the young woman whose discovery about her father sets the entire story in motion.
Lucie has spent nearly two decades believing that her father is dead when she receives a message from Paris suggesting otherwise. The person carrying that information is Charles Darnay. When Darnay is arrested, Lucie turns to Sydney Carton for help, unknowingly bringing together the three people who will form the central love triangle.

Lucie is not simply positioned between two romantic choices. Her determination to discover what happened to her father pushes the characters from London toward Paris and connects their personal lives to the larger conflict developing in France.
Mack has previously appeared in Miss Austen and Hedda. Viewers may also recognize the Scottish actress as Princess Merwyn from The Witcher: Blood Origin.
Francois Civil as Charles Darnay
Francois Civil plays Charles Darnay, an idealistic French emigre whose arrival in London changes Lucie’s life.
Darnay is the person who brings Lucie news that her father may still be alive, but before he can properly help her, he is arrested and charged with treason. Lucie’s attempt to save him brings Sydney Carton into the picture.
The series makes the contrast between Darnay and Carton particularly important. They resemble one another physically, but their personalities and circumstances are very different. Both eventually fall for Lucie, creating a romantic rivalry that runs alongside the political danger surrounding them.

Civil is a major French actor whose recent credits include Beating Hearts and The Three Musketeers films, in which he played D’Artagnan. A Tale of Two Cities brings him into an English-language period drama opposite Harington.
Roxane Duran as Madame Therese Defarge
Roxane Duran plays Madame Therese Defarge, one of the important figures connected to the French side of the story. Current cast listings identify Duran specifically as Madame Defarge, making her one of the few supporting actors whose character has been publicly confirmed before the premiere.
In Dickens’ story, Madame Defarge is closely associated with the revolutionary movement and carries a deeply personal anger toward the French aristocracy. How closely Daniel West’s adaptation follows every element of that characterization will become clearer as the four episodes unfold.

Duran’s recent television credits include Interview With the Vampire. She has also appeared in period productions including The White Ribbon and Riviera.
Ian Pirie as John Barsad
Ian Pirie appears as John Barsad, another character whose identity is now listed in the official production credits available through IMDb. He is credited across all four episodes.
Barsad occupies a dangerous world of informants, political loyalties and shifting identities in Dickens’ original story. His presence makes sense in an adaptation that is emphasizing the novel not only as a romance but also as a political thriller and revenge story.

Pirie has worked extensively in British television and film, with credits ranging from historical dramas to crime series.
Who Else Is in the A Tale of Two Cities Cast?
The supporting ensemble includes Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Yannick Renier, Fehinti Balogun, Barry Aird, Theo Costa-Marini and Guillaume Gallienne. Federation Studios officially announced all six actors alongside Roxane Duran in November 2025.
Their character names have not yet been publicly confirmed in Federation’s official cast announcement, and current streaming listings also leave most of their roles unnamed. Rather than assuming that a particular actor is playing Dr. Manette, Monsieur Defarge, Jarvis Lorry or another familiar Dickens character, those identities are best left open until MGM+ reveals them or the episodes air.

Sharon Duncan-Brewster will be familiar to viewers from Dune, Sex Education and Top Boy. Fehinti Balogun recently appeared in Down Cemetery Road, while Guillaume Gallienne was part of the cast of The Regime. Yannick Renier appeared in Reflection in a Dead Diamond, Barry Aird is known for work including Brassic, and Theo Costa-Marini has credits including Andor.
Prime Video’s international listing also names Layla Ingleby as part of the ensemble, although her character is currently unspecified.

When Does A Tale of Two Cities Premiere?
A Tale of Two Cities premieres in the United States on September 6, 2026, on MGM+. The limited series consists of four episodes and is also set for BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
Daniel West created and adapted the series from Dickens’ 1859 novel, while Richard Clark directs the four-part drama. Federation Stories produces alongside Federation Studio France and Harington and West’s Thriker Films.
